A lot of families have change jars. Some are in the laundry room for loose change found in clothing. Others keep one by their dresser to empty their pockets at the end of the day. We have a change jar in our home too but we do one with a purpose, a plan. As a family we decide on an activity that we all want to do and we use the change jar as a way to save the money for said activity. We do this for a few reasons. It is a great way to collect loose change, it saves money as you don't have to take money out of your budget for the activity, but most importantly it includes the whole family.
Saving the money for an activity as opposed to mom and dad just paying for it teaches kids the value of money. It helps them feel a part of the process too and gives them a sense of pride. It is also fun to work towards a goal as a family. My kids love it! A couple of years ago we were going to Florida and used the change jar to save for an activity while there. Honestly, I don't even remember exactly what we used it for, but to this day my kids grab change when they find it and get excited and call it "Florida money".
When you start your change jar, set a specific goal, even if it is a small one. It can be a pizza party, go to the movies, local attractions, etc. Once that is, done start saving!! Any loose change they find goes into the jar. I always pay in bills so that I get change back and the kids take it to the jar once we get home. The kids can also earn quarters by doing small chores and they can add it to the change jar.
To make it even more fun you can decorate your container. You can either just let the kids choose some fun designs or if you want to get super creative you can decorate it in the theme of whatever you are saving towards and change it each time the goal changes.
Do you have a change jar? If so, what are some fun things you have saved for?
